Very simply Vince - dowse liberally in white glue - I find a flat brush is great for letting me get in between the ranks without covering the bottoms of coats - dunk in fine sand with a few pieces of grit mixed through. Then stain with a mixture of black/brown wash. Random white glue dabs and static grass. I may add some small tufts as well.
Well done, Doug. As I plan 6mm ACW armies, I would be keen to learn how you decorate the bases.
